Steelers vs Panthers Live Stream: The Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers will face off in the final preseason game of the 2019 season. With the Panthers coming off a loss last Thursday and the Steelers coming off a win on Sunday, these two teams are headed in opposite directions at the moment. Even still, it should make for a fun game. In fact, last season the Steelers were only in their 3-4 base defense around 30 percent of the time. So we had to take that into consideration and talk about who comes onto the field in the nickel as well as the dime.
The Pittsburgh Steelers vs Carolina Panthers, , Panthers will close out their 2019 preseason Thursday night on the road against the Steelers vs Panthers, Panthers and while starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will sit out that contest, it appears as though the team’s other three quarterbacks will play.
According to several media reports on Tuesday, Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph has informed everyone that fellow quarterback Joshua Dobbs will start Thursday night against the Panthers. Dobbs is expected to be relieved by Rudolph. The Steelers other backup quarterback on the roster, Devlin Hodges, is expected to play Thursday night in the second half. Hodges did not play any in the Steelers third preseason game this past Sunday night.
For whatever it’s worth, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not reveal what the quarterback rotation would be Thursday night when he talked to the media after the team’s Tuesday practice. The Steelers are expected to travel to Charlotte, North Steelers vs Panthers, on Wednesday.
Through the team’s first three preseason games of 2019, Dobbs has completed 15 of his 28 total pass attempts for 259 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Rudolph, on the other hand, has completed 21 of his 32 total pass attempts in the team’s first three preseason games for 243 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Hodges, who saw action late in the Steelers first two preseason games, has completed 10 of his 18 total pass attempts so far for 117 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. In Hodges, defense, most of his incompleted passes to date should have been caught.
The Pittsburgh Steelers vs Carolina Panthers, , Panthers are on the verge of completing a perfect preseason. The team’s pass rush has notably been on fire so far. Hopefully, the team’s success will carry over to the regular season where wins are a lot harder to come by.
While the final week of the preseason is a time of joy for fans because it signals that the regular season is near, this final week is also a time of dread and tragedy for many young men. Following Week 4 of the preseason, NFL teams trim their rosters down to 53 players. That means hundreds of NFL hopefuls will be out of the league entirely or relegated to practice squads.
While many players are facing an unfortunate fate in Pittsburgh, the following group still have a strong chance to land on the active roster.
Tuzar Skipper has been one of the most impressive players for the Steelers this preseason. He has a sack in each game so far and has routinely taken advantage of opportunities. With nine combined tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble recorded on limited snaps, the undrafted rookie from Toledo has done everything asked or him and then some.
Skipper is facing an uphill battle though. Pittsburgh drafted several linebackers this year, including Devin Bush and Ulysees Gilbert III, who has also had a great preseason. The team also drafted Sutton Smith, who is set to play at linebacker when he finally gets healthy.
Pittsburgh also added Mark Barron in free agency and is returning three starting linebackers from last season. The team also gave Anthony Chickillo a two-year extension in March. Tyler Matakevich, a seventh round pick in 2016, has three years of experience with the team. There’s also Robert Spillane, who is another back half of the roster linebacker outperforming expectations this preseason.
There are so many players trying to squeeze into the limited linebacker positions that some worthy contenders will have to be cut. I’d like to say that Skipper has earned a spot based on his preseason play, but preseason performances are only one part of the evaluation process for players.
If Skipper doesn’t make the active roster, the Steelers will sign him to the practice squad immediately and he’ll get another shot next year.
The Steelers vs Panthers, Panthers’ 2019 preseason schedule is almost over. There’s only one more to go against the Steelers, then they finally move on to the real games. The fourth and final week of the preseason is all about position battles and rookies who are trying to make the 53-man roster. With that in mind, here are five undrafted rookies we will be watching Thursday night
Christian McCaffrey is essentially going to be the Panthers’ No. 1, 2 and 3 running backs. That doesn’t leave much room for the other backs to shine. Holyfield is unlikely to unseat Cameron Artis-Payne for the so-called backup job. So, his only path to the 53-man roster may be to completely outplay Reggie Bonnafon and fifth-round pick Jordan Scarlett. Holyfield has a fumble but he’s also made an impression showing up early to practice and staying late. If nothing else, he’ll make the practice squad.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera says there’s no doubt in his mind Cam Newton will play Week 1 against the Rams, per Steve Reed at the Associated Press.
Newton is recovering from a mid-foot sprain he suffered on a sack against the Patriots last week. He left Gillette Stadium in a walking boot, raising fears that he might miss a significant amount of time. However, Newton has bounced back fast and is throwing at practice this week, albeit not in sight of the media.
Cam has played two games against the Rams in his career and has done well. He’s 2-0 and has thrown for 429 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 111.7 passer rating.
Newton and the rest of the starters will not be playing against the Steelers on Thursday night. That should give Kyle Allen and Will Grier a chance to redeem themselves at the end of what’s been a poor preseason.
